Hundreds of local residents will be participating in the 18th annual Walk to Defeat ALS Sunday morning at Fairborn Community Park located at 691 E. Dayton Yellow Springs Road, according to a release.
Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. and the 2.5-mile walk starts at 10:45 a.m.
This event is a fundraiser for the ALS Association Central & Southern Ohio Chapter to support people living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a fatal and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, the release stated.

Walk to Defeat ALS helps raise money for the programs and services the Chapter provides, free of charge, to individuals and families living with ALS. Services include consultations with healthcare professionals, loaned medical equipment, support groups, and education and information about the disease.
“Last year, we raised more than $130,000. Generous corporate sponsorship, in addition to dollars raised by teams of walkers, help us achieve our goal each year,” said executive director Marlin Seymour.
This year’s sponsors include Touching Hearts at Home, Dole, Hospice of Dayton, Functional Formularies, Hollywood Gaming and Raceway and Michael Ward Legacy.
The Chapter’s last three Walk to Defeat ALS events have raised more than $6 million.

“We’re so grateful to all of our Walk Team Captains, Walk participants and others who donate to help us achieve our goals. Their support truly does make a difference for ALS patients,” said Seymour.
