‘Just hope you’re not there;’ Mall put on lockdown after teen mishandles gun, shoots themselves

MIAM TOWNSHIP — The Dayton Mall was put on lockdown on Sunday after a teen shot themselves while mishandling a gun.

As reported on News Center 7 Daybreak, the parking lot at the Dayton Mall was full of more than a dozen police officers, and customers were filing out of the stores after gunfire was reported.

News Center 7 previously reported that Miami Township police and several other agencies were called to the Dayton Mall on Miamisburg Centerville Road around 3:07 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators told News Center 7 that a teen shot himself accidentally while mishandling a gun.

The teen reportedly left the scene before police arrived, and they are still looking for them.

“You can’t really predict it. You can’t do anything to make yourself safer from it. You just hope you’re not there when it happens,” Jason Rhein, of Miami Township, said.
