Kettering man accused of attacking teen on Centerville bike path indicted

CENTERVILLE — The Kettering man accused of randomly attacking a 17-year-old girl on the bike path at Iron Horse Park in Centerville last month was indicted by a grand jury today.

Johnny Hansen, 33, was indicted on two counts of felonious assault with a sexual motivation specification attached to the charges. He also faces two counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of kidnapping.

Hansen entered a not guilty plea to charges initially filed in municipal court and bond was set by the judge at $750,000. He remains listed as an inmate in the Montgomery County Jail, according to online jail records.

The attack was reported at the Iron horse Park bike trail in the afternoon on Sept. 24.

According to court records, “the victim reported that she was attacked from behind by a male she had passed on the bike path and she was hit multiple times in the head.” She had “numerous large open gashes on her head and was covered in blood,” when police found her.

The mallet said to be used in the attack was found and was covered in blood, according to an affidavit.

Prosecutors said Hansen changed clothes before police found him, but officers found the clothes he had been wearing when the attack was said to have happened. The clothes had blood on them.

A neighbor who heard the attack intervened and helped the victim escape, police said.

“I heard someone screaming and I live right close to the bike trail,” a 911 caller said. “I went down there…he was hitting her on the head with a mallet.”

Police said the victim and Hansen did not know each other.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as serious, but not life threatening. Officers said if the neighbor hadn’t intervened the outcome of the attack could have been much worse.
