Kettering Medical Center first in the region to offer procedure reducing stroke risk

DAYTON — Kettering Medical Center is now offering a cutting-edge procedure that reduces stroke risk.

Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kettering Medical Center is the first hospital in the Dayton region to offer this procedure called transcarotid artery revascularization or TCAR.

The surgery is less invasive and clears an artery in the neck by reversing blood flow away from the brain, according to Kettering Medical Center.

A TCAR procedure lowers a person’s stroke risk, but it also treats those who have already suffered one.

Patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and family history of blockages in their necks all qualify for the procedure.

“This surgery has a rapid recovery period and allows someone to quickly return to their normal everyday life,” said Doctor M. Tipu Rishi, who led the first TCAR procedure at Kettering Medical Center.
