Firefighters were called to the high school at 615 Kessler-Cowlesville Road on reports of smoke coming from the stage area in the Center for Performing Arts (CPA) around 7:45 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews found that a stage curtain in the CPA was burning and caused smoke and an odor to spread through the building.

Haller said additional crews were immediately called to the scene.

Firefighters secured the electricity and extinguished the smoldering curtain with water.

“The cause of the smoke is believed to be direct heat from a stage light causing the curtain to heat up to a point that it began to smolder,” Haller said.

A small portion of a stage curtain was damaged in this incident.

“Quick actions from the staff on site undoubtedly prevented this from becoming a larger incident and creating more damage,” Haller said.

Fire crews from West Milton, Bethel Township, Vandalia, Huber Heights and Troy responded to the high school for mutual aid.

Haller said these crews helped gain roof access and ventilate smoke from the CPA.

Haller said no students, staff, or firefighters were injured in this incident.

Fire crews were at the school for almost an hour, making sure no hazards were present and getting all the smoke out of the building.

The school returned to normal operation after the incident.
