SIDNEY — A 60-year-old Sidney man is in jail on several charges stemming from a standoff with police that began when he refused to come out of a house where tactical officers were attempting to serve a search warrant for narcotics, Sidney police Capt. J.A. Tangeman said Friday evening.
John Hoying is being detained in the Shelby County Jail on single counts of felony obstructing official business, trafficking in drugs and tampering with evidence.
Tactical officers from the Sidney and Piqua police departments arrived at the residence, in the 200 block of Doering Street in Sidney, about 7:45 a.m.
When the officers breached the front door, they were met with verbal threats by an occupant later identified as Hoying, who told them he had a gun. The officers pulled back, leaving the home and surrounding it.

Members of the tactical team then tried to coax Hoying out, but he did not respond to the oral commands.
Additional personnel and equipment from sheriff’s offices in Shelby and Allen counties were called in to help with re-entering the residence. Negotiators with the Sidney and Piqua police were used. The tactical officers fired tear gas into the residence.
Hoying, with assistance from family members, broke his silence and was convinced to come out and surrender. That happened about 1:43 p.m., Capt. Tangeman said.
Sidney police detectives, once the residence was secured by the other officers on scene and Hoying had been taken to jail, recovered cash, suspected cocaine, pills and drug paraphernalia during their search of the property.
No one was injured but heavy damage was done to the residence when tear gas canisters were fired into the structure and officers forced entry.
