3 arrested after fight with park ranger in Dayton; Fully loaded gun found in suspect’s backpack

DAYTON — Three people were arrested Sunday evening after an altercation with a Five Rives MetroParks ranger at Wesleyan MetroPark in Dayton.

A Five Rivers MetroParks ranger was responding to a parking complaint at the park Sunday evening. While there, the ranger heard a single gunshot nearby, according to Mark Hess, Chief of Public Safety for Five Rivers MetroParks.

Bystanders at the park pointed out three people. One of the suspects, an 18-year-old male, had a backpack on him.

“The ranger ordered them all to the ground and all three eventually complied. However, when the ranger went to detain the young man with the backpack in order to investigate further, he resisted and started to fight with the ranger,” Hess said in a statement.

The other two suspects, an 18-year-old female and a juvenile male, got up and attempted to stop the ranger as he was trying to handcuff the suspect with the backpack. At that time, the ranger called a Signal 99, otherwise known as a county-wide call for assistance.

Video from the scene showed at least 11 cruisers that had responded to the park.
