Lawsuit filed against Kettering, police officer for 2017 shooting death

KETTERING — UPDATE @ 1:24 p.m.:

The city of Kettering has released a statement in response to a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the city and a police officer.

“The City of Kettering received notice this morning of the civil lawsuit,” read the statement. “The grand jury already cleared Officer McCoy of wrongdoing. We believe these charges are without merit and we will vigorously defend against them in court.”

INITIAL REPORT:

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the city of Kettering and a police officer in the shooting death of Jason M. Hoops.

Officer Jonathan McCoy shot and killed Hoops during an August 2017 traffic stop.

Cruiser cam footage of the incident captured McCoy telling Hoops not to reach for a gun before the officer fired.

Hoops’ family claimed that he may have been confused by police telling him to place his hands in the air and on the dashboard of the van.

McCoy was placed on administrative leave until a Montgomery County grand jury decided against indicting the officer in December 2017.
