Child, 2 others flown to area hospitals after Springfield explosion

SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE @ 4 p.m.:

Three people, including a child, were injured after an explosion in Springfield Saturday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m. Springfield crews were called to the townhomes in the 1000 block of East Home Road to reports of a natural gas leak.

Moments after crews arrived on the scene an explosion happened, according to Springfield Fire Chief Brian Miller.

A child, around 1 to 2 years old, was rescued from the building involved in the explosion, Miller said.

All three people were taken to the hospital by medical helicopters. Information about their current condition was not available.

No firefighters were injured in the explosion.

“It’s a traumatic day when you have to take young people to the hospital like that,” Miller said.

Miller said he is working to support his crew who had to handle the fire and victims, as well as those impacted by the explosion.
