Local animal shelter busy with lost pet calls, offers free resource to help

After the damage left by the tornadoes that swept through the region, animal shelters are becoming very busy.

News Center 7’s Jenna Lawson went to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton to see how they’re responding to all the lost pets.

One of the biggest things the Humane Society stressed was to get your pets microchipped as soon as you get them just in case situations like these occur.

“We’re inundated with calls of people who are finding pets,” said President and CEO Brian Weltge.

The Humane Society offers a free microchip scanning service, so if you find a pet that you think belongs to someone, you can bring it in to try and track down the owner.

“If your pet goes without identification, then no one knows how to get them back to you,” Weltge said.

The Humane Society is also looking for donations to give to anyone in need.

“We’re looking for dog bowls, cat bowls. We’re looking for more food, more water,” Weltge said.

Another local shelter is donating cat and dog food to storm victims. All you have to do is message Adopt A Pit Rescue on their Facebook page, and they’ll even deliver it to you if need be.
