Local construction companies hit by supply, worker shortage

DAYTON — Construction is just one of the many industries experiencing a labor shortage.

This, on top of other issues, has led to projects being pushed back from weeks to months.

Some of those projects include the building of people’s houses and businesses.

The manager of an area construction company shared how these shortages are affecting the community and how bad they really are.

Patrick Archer, owner of ARCO Construction said that the shortage of workers has been a “big issue” for his company and he has attempted to remedy it without much success.

“I’ve had ads out for months and I can get very few people to apply,” Archer told News Center 7′s Dontre Drexelius, “The ones that do apply want the double the rate and typically cash.”

Archer said that he anticipates that the shortage of employees could last for some time, so Archer and his team will continue to adjust to get jobs done.

But other factors could put a hold on your next construction project.

Customers are paying more for products due to the high demand for materials that aren’t in supply.

Shipping delays have also played a part in getting jobs finished.

Archer said he can’t even get an estimate for when some materials will arrive from manufacturers.

ARCO is just one of the businesses having to adjust to the demands of their customers.

Between the worker shortage, the low supply but high demand and shipping delays, customers could face up to months of waiting for a finalized end result.
