URBANA — A local sheriff who was charged with driving under the influence appeared in court Friday afternoon.

Bodycam video from the traffic stop ends with Melvin in handcuffs because arresting officers believed he had been drinking and driving.
The sheriff, Matt Melvin, and his attorney made no comment to News Center 7 on their first hearing in Urbana Courts.
Melvin’s next court date is set for Jan. 31.
Melvin will be replaced by Chad Burroughs, who ran against Matt Melvin in March of 2024. Burroughs will take over as sheriff in Jan. He has served 25 years as a sheriff’s deputy and sergeant.
