Cruiser camera video obtained by News Center 7 shows a traffic stop in Urbana at 1:12 Wednesday morning.

“How are you doing tonight?” an Urbana police officer asks the driver.

The officer explains why he just pulled over the driver.

The driver is Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin.

TRENDING STORIES:

“You were kind of all over the road back there. And you were stopped at a green light. I can smell an alcoholic beverage and there’s vomit on the side of the vehicle right now,” the officer tells Melvin.

Within moments, an Urbana police sergeant shows up.

Melvin gets out of his pickup for a possible field sobriety test.

“We’re going to walk over here and do some tests,” the Urbana sergeant said.

Melvin responds “No.”

After Melvin refused a field sobriety test he was placed under arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

News Center 7  went to the sheriff’s office in Urbana to get a comment from Melvin.

We were told he was out Thursday.

News Center 7 left a message and is waiting to hear back.

Our newsroom also called Melvin’s lawyer multiple times but only reached an automated voice message.

News Center 7 also reached out to the Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association (BSSA) for comment.

“It’s an unfortunate situation that has occurred,” BSSA Executive Director Bob Cornwell said. “And we would not comment further until there’s some sort of resolution in the court system.”

Melvin’s first court date is Friday.
