Thursday morning, the day after Christmas, some people are out looking for after holiday sales.

“We used to be out the door at 6 a.m. to get all the deals but now we’re like leisurely shopping. Not many deals,” Amy Byers, who was out shopping, said.

With recent closures in the area, the shopping landscape is changing, and may look different going into next year.

Byers is from Miamisburg but now lives in Maryland. She says every time she visits, another store closes. She was surprised by the recent Frisch’s closures.

“It’s our childhood,” Byers said.

Nationwide closures are affecting restaurants and stores alike. However, Oakwood resident Abigail MacPherson is not surprised.

“I used to go [to Party City] for balloons, but then I figured out that you can buy balloons on Amazon and fill at Kroger, and it’s cheaper,” MacPherson said.

MacPherson believes online shopping is the reason for the closures of brick-and-mortar stores.

“I’ve got to be honest, it’s easier to shop on Amazon. They have more variety of party supplies, especially theme parties if you’re into that,” MacPherson said. “When you buy in bulk from Amazon, you get a better price.”

Most shoppers that spoke to News Center 7′s Amber Jenkins said they believe Amazon is cheaper, but they still want to be able to see what they’re buying before it shows up at their door.

According to CBS News, store closures have jumped 69 percent in the past year. The same report says that inflation-weary shoppers are becoming more choosy in their shopping, looking for sales and deals.
