Logan County K9 dies months after joining sheriff’s office

LOGAN COUNTY — The Logan County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of K9 Cane months after joining the force.

The dog was placed out of service Tuesday after receiving a minor injury while training in the sheriff’s office parking lot.

He suffered some internal bleeding as a result and was taken to a vet, according to the sheriff’s office.

When his condition got worse, he was take to MedVet in Columbus for treatment.

“K9 Cane went into cardiac arrest and lost his life at 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 14, in the arms of his handler Deputy Cole Piatt,” said a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.

A necropsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

The dog started his career with Deputy Piatt on Aug. 8. He was born Aug. 8, 2018.

The pair trained together and were state certified Sept. 25, according to the post.

“K9 Cane had a promising career with our office,” said the sheriff’s office. “The passing of Cane will be a great loss for our agency, but even greater loss for Cane's handler Deputy Piatt.”
