Make sure tornado damage repairs are up to code, pass legal standards

As people are rebuilding their homes and businesses after the Memorial Day tornado damage, they must make sure it passes legal standards.

Montgomery County leaders say repairs to minor damage, such as broken windows or shingles, you can do without paperwork.

But major repairs, such as structural damage, is where you’ll need to make sure you’re up to code by getting a repair permit from the county.

Chief building official for Montgomery County Building Regulations, Maury Wyckoff, says these rules not only keep everyone safe, but also protects your wallet.

“If people are asked to get a permit and they don’t, it could affect not only their safety but also it may affect the resale of the building later when the buyer finds out they’ve done work without permits.”
