Man abandons stolen car at Indian Lake school, then steals staff member’s vehicle, district says

INDIAN LAKE, Logan County — A man is in custody after Indian Lake Schools said he stole a staff member’s vehicle from the high school’s parking lot.

“A substitute teacher at Indian Lake High School noticed an unknown person on campus,” district officials said in a Facebook post Friday.

The incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. Friday to Washington Twp. Police and officers confirmed that all the doors to the outside were locked.

“A check of the recently updated outside cameras showed an unknown man leaving a car in the ILHS front parking lot, running across the north side of the building and trying to open vehicles in the student parking lot,” the post read. “The person eventually stole a staff member's vehicle. He never attempted to enter any of the school buildings.”

The district’s superintendent commended the staff for how they handled the incident.

“I want to thank the substitute teacher and ILHS Assistant Principal Dave Coburn for their quick action. In addition, I want to commend our technology department for recently upgrading the cameras on campus,” said Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood.

The district said the man and the stolen staff member’s vehicle were eventually found not long after the incident was reported, when the man showed up at a local medical facility.

“The suspect reportedly stole a car in Michigan, drove into Ohio, abandoned that vehicle at ILHS and then stole the staff member's vehicle,” the district wrote in the post.
