Man accused of beating couple to death with sledgehammer formally charged

DAYTON — A man accused of killing a couple in their home with a sledgehammer has been formally charged.

Cortney Lowe, 33 was indicted on charges of felonious assault and murder, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

As News Center 7 previously reported, an RTA bus driver told police on Dec. 3 that he saw a man walking around covered in blood.

When police got on the scene they said the man, identified as Lowe, told them he was okay and the blood belonged to 64-year-old Cathy Bell.

Police went to Bell’s home and found her and her husband Danny Bell, 66, beaten to death.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5, a bloody sledgehammer was found in the house.

Once at jail, Lowe told police “he heard voices telling him to do what he did,” according to court documents.

Lowe is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond.

He is set to be arranged on Dec. 12.
