Man accused of kidnapping child, locking in trunk of car

DAYTON — A 44-year-old Dayton man was indicted today after police said he kidnapped a child and locked them in the trunk of a car the day after Christmas.

Police said Damon Ellis forcefully removed an 8-year-old boy from his Water Street apartment around 11:30 p.m. and put him in the trunk of a car.

“(Ellis) is observed on camera locking the vehicle and walking away from the vehicle, leaving the victim inside the trunk,” court records read.

Ellis released the child from the car after about 15 seconds, records show.

He faces felony charges of kidnapping, abduction and a child endangering charge connected to corporal punishment

Police also identified Ellis as the person who was driving a vehicle that was shot up in a deadly shooting, where Austin Newell was found dead on Leo Street earlier this month. Tyray Ward was charged yesterday in connection to that homicide investigation.
