Man attempts to drive vehicle off tow truck to avoid arrest

DAYTON — A Dayton man attempted to drive his vehicle off of a tow truck to avoid being arrested in Indiana.

On Friday, Jan. 10, Indiana State Police Trooper Carlson responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-65 Southbound, according to a release.

During the crash investigation, it was determined the driver was lying about his identity and was actually wanted in Ohio on a probation violation for past violent crimes.

While officers tried to detain him, the man pulled away and ran across all lanes of I-65 and almost caused several accidents during the inclement weather.

He then ran into a ditch and then a field. Trooper Carlson prepared his K9 partner Cooper to track the driver when he ran out of a ditch and across the interstate again.

The driver then tried to drive his car off the tow truck to escape, but eventually gave himself up and was placed into custody.

He was identified as 52-year-old Carlos Sept from Dayton.

Upon further investigation and a positive alert from K9 Cooper, Sept was found to be in possession of marijuana and suspected heroin.

According to the release, the probation violation was non-extraditable.

Sept was incarcerated in Jasper County Jail on the following preliminary charges:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance- Level 6 Felony
  • Intimidation- Level 6 Felony
  • False Identity Statement- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Resisting Law Enforcement- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Possession of Marijuana- Class A Misdemeanor
