West Carrollton man identified as worker killed at Middletown Works steel mill

MIDDLETOWN — UPDATE @ 11:40 a.m. (July 28):

A Miami Valley man has been identified as the victim of a deadly workplace accident at a Middletown steel mill, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

Wessley Thomas Blanton, 46, of West Carrollton was identified as the worker killed in the workplace incident Tuesday morning, a coroner’s office spokesperson said in a media release Thursday.

Blanton’s cause of death was ruled as head trauma and was ruled an accident, the spokesperson said.

The accident happened during planned maintenance of the hot strip mill, Patricia Persico, a spokesperson with Cleveland Cliffs Inc. said in a statement. Blanton died as a result of injuries sustained during routine activity, Persico said.

“Cleveland-Cliffs expresses its deepest sympathies to the employee’s family and the company will provide the necessary support to the family during this difficult time,” Persico wrote in a statement. “We will be conducting an investigation with representatives from International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and OSHA.”
