>> UPDATE: One dead after SR-49 pedestrian strike in Darke Co.
When officers arrived on scene, they found that a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Luther Lee Ward, III from Huber Heights, had struck a tree and then a house.
The vehicle had “serious” front end damage and the Ward was unresponsive and trapped inside, police said.
Emergency crews had to extract Ward from the vehicle and performed lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
According to police, the initial investigation revealed Ward was heading west on Taylorsville Rd. at a high rate of speed when he went off the right side of the road, through the front yard of several residences, before striking a tree head on.
The vehicle spun and came to rest against the front of a vacant house on Taylorsville Rd., police said.
Police say that speed, in part, is believed to be the cause of the crash.
The crash is still being investigated by the Huber Heights P.D. Crash Reconstruction Team.
