Man dies after multi-vehicle crash on SR 347 in Perry Twp.

PERRY TWP.; LOGAN COUNTY — One man has died following a multi-vehicle crash that occurred on State Route 347 at US Route 33 Thursday afternoon.

Billy Cowan, 57, of Bellefontaine was identified by the Ohio Highway State Patrol Marysville Post as the fatality in the crash.

According to a press release, Cowan was traveling eastbound on US Route 33, exiting onto SR 347 around 3:40 p.m. when he failed to yield at the stop sign at the end of the exit ramp. This caused Cowan to pull into the path of a 2017 Chevrolet express van, driven by Thomas Klopfenstein, 50, of Wapakoneta, who was traveling north on SR 347. After impact, Cowan, who was driving a 2013 Kia Optima, continued into the southbound lane of SR 347 when he was struck head on by a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Melissa Ragland, 38, of Springfield.

Cowan was transported to Union County Memorial Hospital where he passed away.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured in the crash.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash that remains under investigation by State Patrol.
