Man jumps from bridge into Great Miami River

UPDATE @ 3:45 a.m.:

Firefighters say a man who jumped from a bridge on Rip Rap Road into the Great Miami River has been safely rescued.

Firefighters and rescue crews from Dayton, Butler Township, and Huber Heights responded to the 5500 block of Rip Rap Road around 1:30 a.m. Saturday after police found a man in the water.

The man reportedly called 911 threatening to jump before police found him face-up in the water.

Captain Matt McClain with the Dayton Fire Department says crews used inflatable boats to enter the water and stabilized the man before transporting him to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment.

McClain says the man’s injuries and condition are not known, but crews suspected injuries were sustained to the man’s head, neck, or spine.

Police and medics are on the scene of a water rescue in the 5500 block of Rip Rap Road in Dayton.

Reports indicate a man is currently alert and is laying face-up in a shallow part of the Great Miami River after jumping into the water around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Reports indicate the man called 911 and threatened to jump before police found the man in the water.

Several boats have been requested to the scene and are currently working at entering the water to rescue the man.
