Puppy abandoned in Fairborn gets ready for adoption

XENIA — A 6-month-old puppy found as a stray in Fairborn may have been abandoned because he has a serious, but treatable, skin infection.

Eeyore is at Greene County Animal Control getting treatment for mange, a disease caused by parasitic mites that causes severe itching, hair loss and leads to scabs and lesions.

“He’s beautiful,” Julie Holmes-Taylor, director of Greene County Animal Control, said of Eeyore. “We think he’s great Dane, maybe hound, maybe a little bull dog in there.

“He has a bad case of mange.”

But a case of mange is not a reason to abandon a pet. It can be treated, Holmes-Taylor said.

“We see between 20 and 50 cases a year and larger cities probably handle hundreds,” Holmes-Taylor said.

Animal control officers say mange is treatable, and that they don’t want other pets to wind up like Eeyore.

As for Eeyore, he should be ready for adoption in six to eight weeks, Holmes-Taylor said. Other animals are available now in need of permanent homes.
