‘My son...accidentally shot himself,’ Trotwood police investigate shooting of 3-year-old

TROTWOOD — A 3-year-old boy was shot after he grabbed his mother’s gun at her apartment on Bloomfield Drive in Trotwood Monday night, the mother told 911 dispatchers.

“My son just picked up my gun and accidentally shot himself,” the mother said. “I set it on my bed and went to use the restroom.”

Trotwood police were called to the 4900 block of Bloomfield around 9:40 p.m.

“The child and his mother left the scene prior to police arrival,” Trotwood Police Sgt. Kim DeLong said.

The mother told 911 dispatchers she was driving the child to Miami Valley Hospital North to get him help.

“I’m trying to get to the hospital,” she said. “I don’t want to stop here.”

The mother said the child appeared to be OK and he’s heard in the background crying throughout the 911 call.

Police said the child’s injuries are not life threatening and the boy ended up being transferred to Dayton Children’s Hospital for treatment.
