Miami Valley grocery stores seeing shortage of cream cheese ahead of Super Bowl

MIAMI VALLEY — The star of the Bengals might be Joe Burrow, but the star of Super Bowl spreads starts with one ingredient some Miami Valley stores are running short on before the big game—cream cheese.

It’s something people need for several popular appetizers, such as buffalo chicken dip, spinach artichoke dip, veggie dips and even some desserts.

News Center 7 went around to seven local grocery stores. Trader Joe’s in Kettering, Dorothy Lane Market in Oakwood, and H&L market in Dayton were all stocked.

But when we stopped by the bigger grocery stores, that’s where there were bigger shortages.

Save A Lot in Dayton looked to be about half full, and the Kroger in Kettering had some kinds, but not all.

The Walmart and the Meijer, both in Kettering, had the most missing. There were full gaps on the shelves, and they only had certain kinds of cream cheese.

News Center 7 talked to Jon Leblanc, an associate professor of management at Cedarville University with over 30 years of experience working in the supply chain industry.

He explained the cream cheese shortage across the country starts on the farms.

“The dairy farmers can’t get workers and they can’t get the product out of the barns and where they process it, so it’s again, a problem with the truckers and some, it’s even a problem with having workers, unless they’ve automated their milking process,” Leblanc said.

While the cream cheese shortage might make it difficult to make a few of your favorite Super Bowl dishes, Leblanc said this is the only Super Bowl staple he’s seen that is in short supply right now.

He said stocks of things like chips, dips, and soda are doing just fine.
