Monroe School District notifies parents of students’ offensive social media post

MONROE — Two Monroe High School students are facing disciplinary action after a video showing them re-enacting George Floyd’s death was shared on social media.

Monroe School District Superintendent Kathy Demers sent an email explaining the incident to parents and guardians of students on Thursday. In the email, Demers stated that an investigation was conducted as soon as school administrators became aware of the video.

Demers noted that the original video had been taken down, but images from the video were still being circulated on social media.

The two students in the video have received their punishment, but the school district cannot disclose the specific disciplinary action taken.

Parents and guardians were assured that the school district did not tolerate “inappropriate behaviors and actions” like those in the video.

“The trial and verdict in the death of George Floyd have created a variety of emotions– anxiety, fear, and anger. As educators, it is our responsibility to support and empower students through these challenging times,” Demers wrote.

The school district is not releasing additional details at this time.
