Members of the Montgomery County GOP voted unanimously Sunday to appoint Rob Streck as the new sheriff and to fill the empty seat that was left by Phil Plummer, who was elected in November to the 40th District of the Ohio House.

The vote was originally set to happen at First Grace Brethren Church in Butler Twp., but a small fire forced them to move to the Aullwood Audubon Farm.

News Center 7's James Buechele talked with Sheriff Streck about what he plans on doing with his title.

Streck was Plummer’s Chief Deputy for six years and has been with the department for over two decades.

“To go into a room and feel the love and appreciation, it was great. I was overwhelmed by the turnout, overwhelmed by the vote,” he said.

Two challenges Streck faces is taking over the county jail and the fight against drugs.

“We’ve been through a lot of battles together. We’ve been through a lot of things, allegations, things like that where stuff like that wasn’t truthful or necessary but we got through it,” he said. “Our county has done so much that we need to just keep the fight up, keep the education out there.”

Sheriff Streck will serve the two years left on Plummer’s term, then he’ll have to run for re-election in 2020 – which he said he intends to do.
