Mother, son leap with joy as it’s time to celebrate rarest of birthdays — Feb. 29

Kara Westerfield and her son Logan are preparing to share the rarest of bonds — a leap year birthday — on Feb. 29.

The odds of a parent and child being born on Leap Day are more than 2 million to one.

She’ll be 9 and he’ll be 3 on Saturday.

“It’s really cool to have it and be 2 and almost 3 and being able to tell people, ‘well, you can’t do this to me because I’m only 2,’” Logan told News Center 7’s James Rider on Thursday.

They try to do something special every four years, Mom said. Otherwise, they celebrate either on Feb. 28 or March 1.

“On my fifth birthday we dd a big Barbie party. It was all pink and glitter and Barbie cake,” she said.

Given current population data from the U.S. Census Bureau, only about 205,000 people in the U.S. have a Feb. 29 birthday, according to the reference website thoughtco.com, and for the world’s population, approximately 4.8 million have a Feb. 29 birthday.
