Piqua Fire Department was dispatched to 316 Caldwell Street on a two-alarm fire at 7:14 p.m., Sunday evening.

According to Piqua Fire Department Assistant Chief Paul Brown, the four adults and two pets inside the structure evacuated safely and no injuries have been reported.

The fire department started to fight the fire, which started in the back of the home, with a transitional attack outside, then moved into the residence to make sure everyone was out safely, Brown said.

Once they determined everyone was out of the house, the firefighters started looking for hotspots as the heat went up the walls and moved into the attic space.

All of the windows were opened as they tried to get the heavy smoke, fire, and gas to move outside of the home, Brown said.

The firefighters then moved into a defensive operation and moved outside of the house to spray water in.

The team eventually moved back inside where they focused on locating the hotspots by pulling down the drywall from the walls and the ceiling.

The Piqua Fire Department received mutual aid as every off-duty personnel was called in.

They also worked with the Troy Fire Department Ladder truck, the Fletcher Fire Department, and the Covington Fire Department.

“Luckily we train together a lot so we’re able to come together without training experience and go to work and do our best to put the fire out, take care of the life safety, incident stabilization, and property conservation,” Brown said.

The cause of the fire is not known but a fire investigator is on scene, Brown said.

Brown suspects this residence to be a total loss, due to the amount of water the fire department had to spray in.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
