Dayton police are investigating brake failure as the cause of the accident that left two people injured.

“Right now, it’s too soon to know for sure what happened,” said Amanda Pratt, the Rumpke spokeswoman. “We’re going to conduct a very thorough investigation to find out what happened today.”

A Rumpke safety and maintenance team is working the Dayton police and the state patrol to determine if mechanical failure was involved, Pratt said.

“We’re going to do everything we can to find out what happened.” she said.

UPDATE @ 6:14 p.m.:

The brakes apparently failed on the Rumpke trash truck in the three-vehicle accident on Stanley Avenue at the state Route 4 off ramp that sent two people to a hospital, Dayton police Lt. Randy Beane said.

Two people in a work van hit by the Rumpke truck suffered non-life threatening injuries, the lieutenant said. They were taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

The Rumpke truck was coming off the ramp from Route 4 North when its brakes apparently failed and it slammed into the rear of the work van, which had stopped at the intersection. That collision pushed the work van across Stanley Avenue and into the path of a minivan, Lt. Beane said.

Four people in the minivan-work van collision were not injured, he said, and neither was the Rumpke driver.

Because the accident involved a commercial vehicle, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was checking the Rumpke truck’s brakes on scene to see if they were functional, Beane said.
