UPDATE @ 8:05 p.m.: A man and woman are dead in a shooting Wednesday afternoon at a Kroger store in Jeffersontown, near Louisville, and a suspect is in custody, police said.

The shooting was reported just after 3 p.m. on Taylorsville Road, near Hurstbourne Parkway, CBS affiliate WLKY-TV reported.

Police said a man entered the store, shot another man several times, then went to the parking lot and shot a woman several times. Both victims died at the scene. Their names and ages have not been made public.

Police said the shooter then exchanged fire with an armed citizen in the parking lot, but no one was injured in that exchange.

the suspect left the scene but was captured nearby. His name and age have not been released yet.

"At this point, with the early stages of the investigation, it does appear that she was a random victim in the parking lot," Jeffersontown Police Chief Sam Rogers said.

A reporter asked Rogers if the victim in the store was a random victim.

Rogers said, "I don't have information one way or the other but that does appear to be the case.”

Eric Deacon told WDRB-TV in Louisville he happened to be at the grocery store when he heard gunfire and saw two men run out of the Kroger into the parking lot, shooting at each other.

He said he saw a woman in her mid-50s or early 60s get hit as he was calling 911. Deacon said he went to the woman to start CPR on her but realized he couldn't help her.

Deacon said, "Once they got the gentleman on the ground, I hollered at them and said, 'Look, I'm an EMT. Let me get out here and try to help this woman.' So that’s when I went, ran over, I get down. I’m getting ready to start CPR on her, and when I looked at her, I knew she was gone. There was nothing I could do."

Kroger employees and family members of employees said some people ran out the front door when the shooting started, while others took cover.

"Once I realized they weren't balloons going off, I ran as fast as I could. Just ran through those doors and just darted right to Great Clips," Kroger employee Matara Njuguna said.

A Kroger spokeswoman said the store will remain closed until the investigation is complete.
