Coronavirus: Miami Valley Hospital cardiologist receives plasma, family thankful for support, colleague says

DAYTON — A prominent cardiologist who was reportedly hospitalized due to coronavirus has received a plasma donation after a call for help from the community.

Dr. Mukul Chandra is the medical director of cardiac preventive care and research at Miami Valley Hospital. He had been seeking a plasma donor as a possible remedy for the virus.

Premier Health Hematologist Jhansi Koduri posted on Facebook late Monday that a donor had been found, according to the post. ,

“We are forever grateful for all the volunteers that stepped forward to donate plasma and numerous others working in the background to make it happen,” Koduri wrote in the post.

The Chandra Family released a statement Tuesday afternoon:

“The Chandra family has been overwhelmed by the wonderful outreach from both those in the local community and those around the world who have rallied in their time of great need. They are extremely humbled and thankful for the tireless work of so many. We respectfully ask you refrain from contacting the family or caregivers directly. This will allow us to focus on providing our energy to support the recovery of Dr. Chandra. Thank you for your support, cooperation and understanding.”

Premier Health officials said they cannot confirm whether Chandra is a patient at Miami Valley Hospital due to privacy rules.

Chandra also serves as a volunteer faculty member at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine. He’s been in the role for more than 10 years.

“Dr. Chandra is highly regarded by the college and its students as an excellent M.D. and teacher,” said Wright State spokesman Seth Bauguess. “The Boonshoft School of Medicine wishes him a speedy recovery.”
