National Museum of U.S. Air Force to showcase new survival exhibition

DAYTON — The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is set to host a new traveling exhibit named, Survival: The Exhibition.

The exhibit, created by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc., invites museumgoers to experience the world’s first and only traveling exhibition that provides practical, real-world, and science-based techniques to prepare all ages for survival situations, according to a release from the museum.

Starting February 18 through May 7 during regular museum hours, the exhibit will be available to the public.

News Center 7′s Xavier Hershovitz spoke with Michael Brimmer, education division chief at the National Museum of the U.S. Airforce, and he say there are things to people need to be concerned about if they are in a survival situation.

“Survival is about keeping a cool calm head and realizing what you have with you,” he said,” and that’s you wits.”

Hershovitz says the exhibit aims to help visitors prepare for some of the most common survival situations you will encounter.

It will also teach you how perform CPR, learn how to start a fire and there’s even a crash course on which berries to eat and NOT eat.

Hershovitz reports it’s those hands-on experiences that Brimmer says will make the information stick.

“If you get that tactile engagement, they’ll remember that more,” he said.

The exhibit will also teach skills for any scouts that may even earn them a merit badge or two.

“Each one of the exhibits connect directly to the standards that the educators in the classroom are trying to meet with the state and the country,” said Brimmer.

While there are no planes in this exhibit, it’s connection to the U.S. Air Force Museum will still be there.

“We operate in every single region that this exhibit displays,” said Brimmer. “We have folks in the desert of course, we have folks in the high mountains, we have folks in the tropics.”
