Just as the Miami Valley is about to get a taste of summer weather, officials are reminding people to stay safe in and around the water.
May 20-26 is National Safe Boating Week.

Miami County Park District shared tips to stay safe on the water, including “The Boating Safety Seven”:
- Wear your U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket
- Take a boating safety class
- Carry all required safety gear
- Use your engine cut-off switch
- File a float plan before you leave shore with someone you trust that includes details about the trip, boat, persons, towing or trailer vehicle, communication equipment, and emergency contacts
- Be aware of weather and water conditions
- Boat sober, be considerate of others
In addition to these seven tips, the park district advised boaters to be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning and to anchor at least 20 feet away from the nearby boat that this running a generator or engine.
