New bills promote video cameras to catch people driving past buses

Two new laws in the making are promoting more video cameras on school buses to catch people putting kids at risk.

Failure to stop for school buses when they are dropping off or picking up is illegal and dangerous.

A bill introduced earlier would increase the penalties for violators and makes some funding available for districts to add cameras on the outside of buses. A new bill would encourage camera use and give video evidence a firmer footing in the law for criminal prosecution.

There have been 28 incidents so far this year in the Kettering City School District.

“It’s too many because children are in a very vulnerable position at that point in time,” said Ken Lackey, director of business services for the district.

It would cost $45,000 to install exterior cameras on buses in the district.

The proposal has just been introduced. News Center 7 will be watching to see how it does in the legislative process.
