The $2 million is going to fund a study on US-35 to see what needs updating and upgrading.
“A plethora of on-ramps, exit-ramps through downtown. There’s desolate areas underneath 35 through downtown,” Escobar said.
US 35 could be transformed soon, and Dayton city officials say they are one step closer to the transformation.
“A plan in place with the input from stakeholders, from the public, from interested parties,” Escobar said. “What does this look like in the future?”
Congressman Mike Turner helped secure the grant to fund the study. He said in a statement the federal money is a critical investment in Dayton’s future. The study’s findings will help city officials get the funds to make the upgrades a possibility.
“The City of Birmingham did something similar where they revitalized all the underpasses under a major highway that they had. They call it Birmingham walk. They have dog parks and skate parks and different other revitalized areas,” Escobar said.
The study is just step one in the process of transforming US-35, but it’s a big one to make these plans into a reality.
