The reason behind this? A strong geomagnetic storm from the sun has sent solar flares making impact with Earth’s magnetic field.

The strength of these storms can vary, but given the recent overperformance of solar storms in the past six months, it is plausible to mention we have a chance to see them again!

To give us optimal viewing, we would need a KP Index of 7 or higher. The KP Index forecast shows the best chance is likely Friday night, and this is subject to change as we get closer. The sun is 90+ Million Miles away from us, so any changes in the trajectory or strength of the solar storms can change the visibility of whether or not we see the Northern Lights.

While the Northern Lights may not be visible to you with a naked eye, you could find yourself getting great images using your smartphone or professional camera. If you place your camera in long-exposure and night mode. This will allow for your lens to capture the colors better. You will want to be away from city lights and allow your eyes some time to adjust to the darkness. Given virtually zero moonlight and a lack of cloud cover, viewing conditions are very favorable should everything pan out!

If you see the Northern Lights, be sure to share your photos with us here.
