“Wed need to honor those officers and the victims that lost their lives when they were just out having an innocent, fun night out,” Niki Lutz told News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis on Wednesday night.

Three years ago on the night of Aug. 4, Connor Betts opened fire in the busy downtown entertainment district, killing nine people, including his sister Megan Betts. Investigators said 27 others were injured.

Of those injured in the gunfire was Connor Betts’ best friend, according to a Dayton police report.

Betts may have changed the Dayton community forever, but people have found ways to keep living their lives.

“I think that we can give respect to the people that we lost that night and the people that were injured and take that tragedy and hopefully learn from it, and hopefully become better people toward each other,” said Paul Gillespie, who lives in the Oregon District.
