WAYNE COUNTY — Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Wayne County Sunday evening.

The Wayne County Emergency Communication Center received calls of a female threatening suicide on South St. in Centerville, Ind. just after 6:30 p.m.

When a Centerville Police Officer arrived on scene, he encountered a woman sitting on the front porch. She began yelling at the officer when he approached.

As the officer attempted to check on the woman, he noticed she was holding a weapon. Police said the officer took cover behind his patrol car and started verbally commanding the woman to drop the weapon. At one point, the woman went back into the residence.

The woman came back outside and pointed the weapon at the officer and a Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy who had arrived on scene. At that point, the deputy fired one round from his department-issued rifle, hitting the woman.

Both the officer and deputy immediately provided medical attention until firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene. Once on scene, paramedics took over life-saving efforts, according to the release.

Both Centerville Police Chief Ed Buchholz and Wayne County Sheriff Randy Retter requested Indiana State Police investigate the incident.
