FIRST REPORT:
A man accused of shooting at the Clay Twp. administration building before he was shot by police Friday is now in jail.
Multiple law enforcement sources identified the suspect as Aaron Mitchell, 40, who was booked Monday evening into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of felonious assault, awaiting the filing of formal charges.
Two Clay Twp. officers, who have not been identified, are on paid leave following the police-involved shooting, Clay Twp. Police Chief John Van Gundy said Monday.
The incident started about 1 p.m. Friday when a man fired shots at the Clay Twp. administrative building on Arlington Road, just north of Interstate 70.
“Actually, me and my sergeant were discussing a case in my office. We heard some gunshots,” Van Gundy said. “At that point we exited the door to find the suspect out there.”
Officers approached the man, who fled in a car.
The suspect drove east into Clayton with police in pursuit. He was stopped about 1:15 p.m. after running over a tire deflation device laid down by a state troopers on North Diamond Mill Road, south of U.S. 40.
Law enforcement officers blocked Arlington Road at the Clay Twp. administrative building for several hours. Investigators also were working on North Diamond Mill Road in Clayton, where the suspect was shot. One gun was found in his car, investigators said.
“It's very unexpected. There’s a few that it’s been pretty traumatic, too. It’s something that we’ll get through,” Van Gundy said.
