Sgt. Nick Creech said that train crew reported seeing an unoccupied vehicle on the tracks but were unable to stop before the train hit it. Police contacted the registered owner of the vehicle and found that it had been stolen.
Nobody was hurt, and police had not found anyone in the vicinity.
Creech said that police are investigating, but it is likely that the stolen vehicle was either deliberately ditched on the tracks or became stuck during a joy ride, although he said that this was the first time he had seen a stolen vehicle be left on the tracks.
The incident remains under investigation.
