Ohio unemployment claims rise this week amid changing system

Ohio unemployment claims went up this week, echoing a trend seen nationally, as the coronavirus cases continue to surge in the state.

Ohio saw 38,327 people file initial jobless claims last week, which is up from the 36,327 seen the week before.

Continued claims also jumped in the latest data, with 274,658 continued claims before filed with the state unemployment office. Last week, Ohio had seen 271,518 continued claims filed.

The state also reported today 262,514 Ohioans received Pandemic Unemployment Assistance payments last week.

So far, since the pandemic began Ohio has paid out $7.5 billion in unemployment payments and issued more than $7.4 billion in PUA payments.

Unemployment has been paid out to more than 868,000 Ohioans since March.
