As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, firefighters said the woman who died was bedridden and on oxygen, medical equipment that made the fire even worse.

“They’re small bombs, but they create fireballs,” Springfield Fire Chief Jacob King said.

King said the home was fully engulfed in flames when his crews arrived just minutes after receiving the alarms. They ran right in the front door as flames showed everywhere there and oxygen canisters continued to burst.

The chief said his crews pulled back out of the front door and brought water around to the back door. That’s where they discovered John Davis, near the back porch, and headed on inside to try and rescue his wife, Carol Davis. They were too late and the couple died in the fire.

Jacob McCleary, Carol’s son and John’s stepson, told News Center 7 on Saturday that his mom was disabled and unable to move without a lot of help. She would’ve turned 80 next month.

“Losing a parent, losing anybody in this fashion is now what you want to wake up to,” he said. “I’m speechless.”

McCleary did not know his parents didn’t have working smoke detectors.

Firefighters said they are interviewing other people who were staying in the home to find out more about that and everything that happened.
