Across the state, the average price for a gallon on regular unleaded gas is $4.17. In Ohio, the previous record was set in 2011, when gas was selling for an average of $4.15 per gallon.

News Center 7′s James Rider looked into what drivers can do to save money at the pump.

There are cellphone apps such as GasBuddy and AAA that can help find the gas stations with the lowest prices, but that’s only part of the equation.

There are other apps that can do much more to help save on gas.

For instance, on the GasBuddy app, you can get their card that will save you up to 25 cents per gallon at most stations, but not at discount clubs.

The app called “Upside” is another method. The app can help you find deals in your area, and you can pick one to use your registered card at the station to save money each fill up. They also offer different sign-up bonuses depending on the code you enter when you sign up.

Different companies also offer rewards programs. For instance, Shell has a fuel rewards program that could save you at least five-cents per gallon every time, and this is just for being in their program.

Credit cards are also something you want to be mindful of. You will likely want to avoid ones with an annual fee, but there’s several that offer better cash-back options on gas.

According to Nerd Wallet, the target you should be aiming for when looking at credit cards are three-percent for gas, which can add up to make a difference.

At Walmart, Murphy Drive Rewards is a way to save when you go to that station frequently.

Kroger Fuel Rewards can also be helpful if you shop there, or when the grocery store offers bonus fuel points on gift cards. You can pick up cards for things you’d buy anyway and potentially save a dollar per gallon of gas on a fill up.

You can try to use some of these methods together with one another, and while it may take some time, a little work could go a long way with gas prices soaring.
