PETA urges people to stop using ‘anti-animal language’

PETA has asked people to stop using “speciesism” in conversation and suggested alternatives to common phrases using “anti-animal language.”

“Words matter, and as our understanding of social justice evolves, our language evolves along with it,” read a tweet sent by PETA Tuesday. “Here’s how to remove speciesism from your daily conversations.”

Instead of using an idiom like “beat a dead horse,” the organization suggested using “feed a fed horse.”

PETA compared “anti-animal” phrases to racist, homophobic and ableist language in a second tweet.

The organization also claimed that the phrases “trivialize cruelty to animals” and that no longer using them would make more people “appreciate animals for who they are.”
