UPDATE at 1:41 a.m. ET, May 29:

Dayton Police, assisted by other tactical units, began their standoff just before 12 p.m. in the 200 block of Alaska Street on reports of a burglary in progress.

Officers later revealed that a woman’s estranged husband was trying to break into her home, which was caught on security cameras. The husband violated a temporary protection order against him by attempting to approach his wife who was in the process of divorcing him, Major Christopher Malson, the Operations Support Commander & Critical Incident Commander from the Dayton Police Department, said.

Law enforcement agents believed that he was inside the home they were in a standoff with after talking to him on the phone.

Police attempted to extract him from the home for more than 12 hours.

The standoff originally occurred because the husband had a history with weapons and violent crimes, which prompted a SWAT team response.

However, shortly after midnight on Monday, they discovered the man was not inside the home at all. Officers believed he left the home before police got to the scene.

There were no hostages taken during the standoff and no one was injured.

Detectives continued to track his whereabouts and look into any charges that could be placed against the estranged husband. So far, he might face breaking and entering charges in addition to violations of protection order charges. No information was given as to whether the husband would receive more charges for the hours-long standoff.

A female victim called 911 claiming while she was at church, she watched her husband break into her home.

“So, I am in Troy right now, I have a security camera,” she told dispatchers. “I have a (Temporary Protection Order) TPO against my husband and he just broke into my house.”

“Is her inside right now?” Dispatchers asked.

“Yes, he’s inside right now,” she replied.

Robertson also spoke with neighbors Sunday who saw what happened.

“I just so happened to hear all this commotion,” said Curtis Ford. “So, I go down the street, look down here, there’s about five or six police cars.”

He lives just down the block and says he was home when police first pulled up and watched as crews tried to get the man to come out.

“The cops were saying to the guy, I’m not sure what the guy’s name is, but he was telling him to come outside,” Ford told Robertson. “We’re not going nowhere, we got to get you some help. It kind of freaks you out a little bit.”
