Police asking for help finding suspect in killing of man in Dayton backyard

The man found shot to death in the backyard of a home on East Hudson Avenue Monday night is 41-year-old Michael Hefner, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

It is not clear if Hefner was from the Miami Valley.

Dayton police initially described the man as being in his early 20s.

Hefner was shot at least once and homicide detectives are working to determine what led to the incident, Dayton police Sgt. Thomas Schloss said.

Lt. Jason Hall said detectives are looking for witnesses, people who have information, no matter how small, to help in the investigation.

The police department is encouraging the public to contact Crime Stoppers at 937-222-STOP to provide any information. Callers can remain anonymous.

Hall said there are rewards for information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible.

The incident was reported in the 100 block of East Hudson Avenue about 9:50 p.m. Monday.

A caller to 9-1-1 reported hearing gunshots and seeing “a guy laying there in the yard,” according to the call obtained by this news organization.

“Behind --- East Hudson Street somebody just got shot,” the male caller tells the emergency operator. “They in the backyard.”

The caller tells the operator he can see the body on the ground in the yard. “And it was like several gunshots that went off. I just heard the gunshots and looked out my back window and seen a guy laying there in the yard.”

Dayton police asked for at least two nearby streets to be closed to traffic for their investigation.
