TIPP CITY — Police are warning the public of a payroll scam that is spreading through local businesses.
According to a post on the Tipp City police Facebook page, the scam is targeting people who use Automated Clearing House to get paid. Someone posing as an employee sends an email to payroll asking for changes to be made to their payroll, often changing routing and account numbers to banks and accounts not authorized.

In some cases, the changes are not challenged or caught.
Last week, someone posing as Dayton Public Schools superintendent Elizabeth Lolli emailed the district’s payroll department saying they wanted to make bank account changes. Payroll then sent the person a form to change bank account information, and the superintendent’s $5,000 check was direct deposited into the fraudulent account.

Police are asking those that work in payroll to follow up with any payroll change requests.
